Winter time for exotic fruits, the real cost of pineapple in supermarkets

An overview of the latest pineapple market shows in general prices for pineapples are low at the moment, due to a big supply.

Even the opening of the Chinese market for some South American producers has not yet made an impact on volumes to other markets.

Costa Rica is one of the main sources for pineapples, with producing companies using technologies that allows them to produce efficiently, and achieve a good tonnage per hectare for being exported in Europe, as their main markets.

However, despite the labor, the technology and supply costs, the price of pineapple remains incredible low. 2 for 1 represents the most spread offer especially on winter time, when the demand for exotic fruits is flooding the markets.

Few years ago, The Guardian engaged in a documentary showing the road of pineapple from Costa Rica to UK supermarkets and its consumers.

To achieve such low prices, a look behind the scenes of production, working conditions, health can give a short glimpse of reality. As loved as it is for its taste and incredible contribution to human body, pineapple is one fruit which is taken for granted in Europe and elsewhere.

Now, the new challenge for Costa Rica is China; the journey from the Caldera port to Shanghai of 25-28 days results in a relatively short life in the Chinese market. But local producing companies believe that it will be a great success for Costa Rica pineapple market. (source http://www.freshplaza.com/article/184712/OVERVIEW-GLOBAL-PINEAPPLE-MARKET)
